WOW Tip of the Week – Small steps add up to big gains

stair-climbing-boy-on-concrete

Did you know that taking the stairs can benefit your health?

Stair climbing is a great way to get fit.  It’s actually a unique form of exercise that can have a powerful and positive impact on your health over time.

While most of us think of exercise as a specific type of activity or ‘sport’, evidence shows that everyday activities that are easily sustainable, like walking and stair climbing, are closely associated with improved health.

Here is why stair climbing matters:

  • Burns more calories per minute than jogging
  • Reduces cardio risk
  • Helps control weight and builds muscle tone
  • Improved respiration

Stair climbing is also easy to build into your life:

  • It doesn’t require any special skills, training or sporting prowess
  • It’s efficient – saves up to 15 minutes a day and cuts carbon
  • It makes use of the world around us and does not cost anything
  • You can start with just a flight or two and build up over time
  • It’s a routine you can sustain
  • No Lycra required!

Is stair climbing for everyone?  Certainly not.  Those with joint problems in their legs may not be able to tolerate the stairs.  But if your joints can tolerate it, try going up and down a flight of stairs, then do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, and see how easy it is to incorporate this everyday activity into every day, while positively impacting your health.

Quality

Patient Experience thru July 2016

flhs_globe

Becoming the best place to receive health care on the planet starts with all of us!

It is our mission to support and improve the health of the communities we serve.

Each quarter, we monitor our results for providing excellent care and patient experiences, and we will post the results.

Please keep in mind that most results are posted two months after the care is delivered.

There will be three types of reports that will be posted here:

1. Patient Experience-any setting that sends a survey to a patient will be on the report. The results are displayed by percentile ranking. Percentile means how well we do compared to everyone else that our vendor uses. For example, a 90th percentile ranking means we did better than 90% of the other places. Our goal is to be the best!

2. Clinic Quality Measures-our goals are set each year, but follow the state reporting rules. Our results are available on a monthly basis.

3. Hospital Quality Measures-the measures are determined by state reporting rules. We strive to achieve a 95% success rate.

National Healthcare Supply Chain Week (SC Week) is October 2-8, and the theme is: Supply Chain: Leading Change. Advancing Healthcare. In today’s rapidly shifting healthcare landscape, hospitals and health systems are increasingly challenged to reduce costs and improve patient outcomes without sacrificing the quality of care. Supply chain professionals play a pivotal role in leading their organizations to meet these demands and continue to thrive amid changes.

American Pharmacists Month

October is American Pharmacists Month!

“Know your pharmacist, know your medicine.”

This month we encourage you to get to know your own pharmacist, and encourage your patients to do the same. Stay tuned throughout October for our informational emails as well as fun contests.

Also, October 18th is National Pharmacy Technician Day!

This week we challenge you to make your own Emergency Medical ID card for  your wallet, which should include your personal information, emergency contacts, health conditions, allergies, and medications.  If you already have a medical ID card, update yours or make one for your spouse or children for this challenge.

  • If you would like to use a free website to help you make a card, please use THIS LINK.
  • If you would like to make your own card to save and update, a word document with a template is included as an attachment to this email.

Every person who makes an Emergency Medical ID card should send an email to our resident pharmacist Tina Larsen at clarsen@welia.org so that you can be entered into a drawing for some fun prizes. Complete this challenge before Monday October 10th to be entered.

Thank you for your continued support,

National Healthcare Food Service Workers Week

Help celebrate National Healthcare Food Service Workers Week

In October 1989, President George Bush announced the first annual “National Health Care Food Service Week,” to observe the contributions of professionals in the health care food service industry. The week of observation reaches out to professionals such as cooks, chefs, bakers, dietary aides, dieticians, and food service volunteers who provide delicious and health conscious meals for health care facility patients, guests and staff.

From the preparation to the delivery of foods in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, these professionals often work behind the scenes, but play an integral role in the nourishment of staff and patients. For those that go above and beyond to make sure that everyone’s dietary needs are met, “National Health Care Food Service Week” recognizes the extent of their culinary contributions to patient care at FirstLight Health System.

Please take a moment to thank our talented Dietary Staff at FirstLight for their dedication and commitment to quality care!
