Prevention

Prevention has been the big buzz word over the past few years.  In fact, I think many start to yawn when they hear the word and underestimate its importance.

The quest for preventative programs-especially in the workplace- is on the rise. Here are some research results taken directly from the always-interesting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention site, the “Investing in Prevention Improves Productivity and Reduces Employer Costs” study.

Measuring Your Waist

Did you know that if most of your fat is around your waist rather than at your hips, you’re at a higher risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes?

Measuring waist circumference is a tool helps screen for possible health risks that come with overweight and obesity.

For MEN:  your risk goes up with a waist size that is greater than 40 inches.

For WOMEN: your risk goes up with waist size that is greater than 35 inches.

To correctly measure your waist, stand and place a tape measure around your middle, just above your hipbones.  Measure your waist just after you breathe out.  The tape measure should be not-too-tight and not-too-loose.    …

Stress

We all get to that point, where stress and frustration have hit an all new high and we feel lost.  Recently, I went to a course at the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing and we talked a lot about stress and how is impacts all of us.  Some of us know how to manage our stress, but some of us struggle.  Stress is our bodies fight or flight response. Stress can be triggered several different ways: running late, traffic, money problems, work, your health and so many more. We all respond to stress differently, feeling tired, change in eating habits, aches and pains, anger, anxiety, depression, increase in tobacco, drugs etc.  Simple things can help us manage our stress, resting, meditating, exercising, taking time to yourself, drinking water and asking for help. Or one thing we practiced in the course was deep breathing, below is the exercise we used.  It is simple and it really only took me a minute to feel completely relaxed and like I could take on whatever was coming my way.      …

Oversized Handbags

Today we are looking into one recognized dimension of wellness = Environmental.  This is The capability to live in a clean and safe environment that is not detrimental to health.

One way we can contribute to improving this dimension of wellness is to help out the Earth by keeping it clean.  Make it your goal to use REUSABLE BAGS whenever possible!

By now we all know what a waste of resources most plastic bags are. People consume billions of plastic bags each year.  This excess layer of packaging costs energy and money to produce-and bags are bound to end up in a landfill, if not litter, sooner or later. Who doesn’t want to live in a cleaner environment, right?  …

Finally The Sun Is Here!

Finally the SUN is here!  Part of a good health and wellness plan is a good sun protection program.

I know I soaked in a few rays this weekend sitting outside with family and friends.  I thoughtfully applied sunscreen at the start of my day and reapplied every so often, but it was helpful to review the information below.  …
